Yeah, I know, I wasn't gonna submit any new stuff... but I'm in such a good mood today that I can't help it. *found a very rare import videogame on eBay and was able to win a bid war over it*
The character is Dilandau from Escaflowne; the title is a line from " How About You" by Staind.
I don't normally use song lyrics to accompany pics, but I just randomly heard that song and was inspired. That particular line seemed to fit. After all, Dilandau did attain a lot of power and prestige as a Zaibach captain - at great cost to himself, especially in the end.
There's another dimension to this, too. Compare him and Van - Dilandau must have worked all his life, been put through horrific tests and rigorous training to achieve his rank, and certainly the stress wouldn't have helped his mental instability. (Surely pressure and ambition had a major role in turning him into the person he was during the series; that much aggression isn't normal.) Van, on the other hand, was born into his status - of course he's troubled too, and went through trials and hardships of his own, but from the outside he seems lucky. I'd half imagined, while drawing this, Dilandau looking at Van while the lyrics "I sold my soul to get here, how 'bout you?" played.
Sketched in mechanical pencil, inked with a random ballpoint pen. Crappy grey background done in Photoshop 7.
Well, Dilandau and Van are designed to be parallel characters anyways; Dilandau = chaos, and Van = stability. It goes with the whole alchemic theme that is a big part of Escaflowne (Just look at the colors of the Guymelefs if that's not proof enough!) However, I was never quite sure how Dilandau landed the job he did, I believed it had a big part to do with the experiments. I'd hate to reveal some of the spoilers of the show right here, but he was far from who he was when Zaibach got a hold of him. I figured he did so well in the experiments that he had prooven himself to be a good leader, and obviously they needed someone agressive enough to lead troops into some pretty dangerous situations and at all costs in order to obtain the Dragon. Either that or Dr. Dornkirk looked through his little machine and saw that Dilandau would be a succesful leader inspite of his obvious pyschotic tendencies. Atleast he wouldn't be distracted by normal things like sex and such....which I'm prolly gonna get yelled at for. >.<; I mean, it's nice to fantasize, but in all actuality I doubt if Dilandau gave much thought to sex at all. He got off on being sadistic and burning things, right? There's his version of sex right there.
Either way it made for a very interesting character and some rather unexpected plot twists. ^^
And he looks so sad and lonely in this pic. I love how you do the armor. Now I want to hug heem! ;-;

"'Well, then', the Cat went on. 'You see a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad.'"
Sounds like you've been reading Sarah-neko's fics. At least, that's where I've primarily seen the theory that Dilandau was aroused more by violence and powere trips than by conventional sex.
You're right, I don't see Dilandau as being particularly sexually active. (True, I've drawn some stuff that might seem to contradict that... but eh. ) I imagine he'd have experimented, being a teenage boy with the authority, self-sufficiency, and money to be able to, but I doubt he did so often. Now, I'll agree that a lot of his sexual energies were probably expended through violence - and yes, dominance/sadism would almost certainly be a turn-on for him.
And yes, I think much of the point of the experiments was to create an ultimate soldier, someone who could serve Dornkirk's vision with the dedication and ferocity that a normal individual couldn't have. Dilandau was essentially bred to fight, I'm sure his aggressive tendencies were encouraged. But he's also got a lot of natural charm, when he wants to use it. And look at how loyal his men were - he must have been capable of genius manipulation to make them that devoted, or else (as I believe) there was a real bond there. Anyway, I think Dilandau was quite driven to be the best, and proud of what he'd achieved.
Another note: ever notice that Van and Dilandau have the same color scheme? Red, black, and white. Dilandau is dominated by red and black (his uniform and guymelef) and has pale hair; Van has dark hair and wears light pants and a red shirt, and the Escaflowne is white. If you notice, Cerena's color scheme is opposite to Dilandau's - her hair and eye colors, and when Allen's not putting her in pink, her clothing is green.
I'd hug him, but I doubt that would make him feel better and he'd hurt me if I tried. ^.^;
That being said, congrats! I think this is the very first sad!Dilandau fan image I've ever seen. Plenty of pissed!Dilandau and horny!Dilandau pics floating out there in fandom, let me tell ya, but not much in the way of sad!Dilandau. Which is a pity, because he is human, and I'd imagine that he gets down every once in a while, too.
I love the shading, as always. His expression is beautifully pained, and the whole "I'll hug myself 'cause no one else will" pose fits the mood you're going for perfectly. My one complaint is that the hilt of the sword is a tad too short. There should be plenty of length there that there is some excess when he wraps his hands around it, but with the way it's drawn here one of his hands would completely swallow it and the sword would then be unweildly.

As ALWAYS some fantastic work, here! I really love the shading on this. On his shoulder-guards... or whatever they are... the shading is so subtle, but still highly necessary and effective. Good Job! ^^ I loves it!
